Classes in public schools for SY 2023-2024 to start on Aug. 29 --- DepEd

School Year (SY) 2023-2024 in public schools will officially start on Aug. 29, the Department of Education (DepEd) on Thursday, Aug. 3, announced. (DepEd / MB Visual Content Group)
“The Department of Education (DepEd) announces that the opening of classes for School Year (SY) 2023-2024 in all public schools will be on August 29, 2023,” the agency said in an advisory. READ: [https://mb.com.ph/2023/7/26/dep-ed-eyes-august-29-as-the-start-of-classes-for-school-year-2023-2024](https://mb.com.ph/2023/7/26/dep-ed-eyes-august-29-as-the-start-of-classes-for-school-year-2023-2024) DepEd added that private schools, may “choose to open classes on any date” starting the “first Monday of June but not later than the last day of August” as per Republic Act 11480 entitled “An Act to Lengthen the School Calendar from Two Hundred (200) Days to Not More Than Two Hundred Twenty (220) Class Days.”

Enrollment period, guidelines to follow

While DepEd already announced the school opening, the “enrollment period” in public schools has yet to officially start. In a Viber message, DepEd Spokesperson Michael Poa said the “enrollment period shall be indicated in the school calendar guidelines to be issued." Poa said that DepEd is currently finalizing the school calendar guidelines to be issued “soon.” In a message sent to reporters via Viber, DepEd Deputy Spokesperson and Assistant Secretary for Field Operations Francis Cesar Bringas added that the DepEd issuance which will be released is the School Calendar for SY 2023-2024. “It will cover all activities related to the school year which shall include the enrollment period among others,” he added. As part of the preparations for the opening of a new school year, Bringas said that Early Registration was also conducted in public schools. Bringas added that during this time, schools will also know if there will be transferees from other schools. “Our BEIS (Basic Education Information System) is properly updated for the beginning of SY (BOSY) data,” he added. DepEd conducted the Early Registration of incoming Kindergarten, Grades 1, 7, and 11 learners in public schools from May 10 to June 9. As of June 13, data obtained by the Manila Bulletin from DepEd showed that 4,198,932 learners participated in the Early Registration for SY 2023-2024. As per DepEd, those who "underwent the early registration process but are not considered officially enrolled” are considered “pre-registered” learners. Just like in the previous years, DepEd reiterated that incoming Grades 2-6, 8-10, and 12 learners from public schools are considered “pre-registered,” thus, they no longer need to participate in the Early Registration.
